INSTALLATION OF PTFE PISTON SEALS
Installing PTFE piston seals is not always an easy task. The use of installation tools is recommended but often not convenient when working with a wide variety of sizes and applications. Finger installations are practical with rings of smaller cross-sections. Using fingers or a rounded plastic stick, knead the ring over the piston into the groove. With rings of larger cross-sections it may be necessary to heat the ring. Warming the ring in water or oil at 130° F or 140° F for about 5 minutes will soften the material for easier installation. Always avoid inconsistent stretching or overstretching of the PTFE seal.To prevent the PTFE ring from snapping into the wrong groove, cover wear ring grooves with plastic tape.
After seal installation, assembly of the cylinder may be difficult if the piston seal is loose on the piston or the cylinder has an inadequate leading edge chamfer. In such cases, compress the piston seal with belting or a suitable hose clamp. If the piston seal must pass threads or any other sharp edges during the cylinder assembly, cover the edges with plastic tape or wrap.

Our Style PSU piston seal, or uniring, is a laminated one piece double acting seal made of cast polyurethane. The tough outer layer is highly resistant to abrasion and is impregnated with molybdenum disulfide to reduce friction. The softer inner layer acts as a static seal and also energizes the OD to make full contact with the bore. This seal may be used to replace an existing Uniring or other seals of the same dimensions - O-rings, O-rings with back-ups, T-seals, U-seals, etc. NOTE: Piston diameter 'I' dimensions are given for pistons without wear rings.

The HMU style multi-lip rod u-seal combines the pressure-compensating, uni-directional characteristics of a u-seal with the multi-lip sealing effectiveness of compression-type stacked-packings. Made from premium materials, the HMU utilizes several sealing lip edges for dry rod performance while minimizing friction. The multi-lip design maintains a critical sealing edge even though increasing pressure moves the line of contact down towards the heel. NOTE: If Product number ends in 'U' it's constructed of Polyurethane, if sku ends in 'N' or 'V' it's Homogenous.

The RBS style rod buffer seals are a rectangular urethane buffer ring designed to absorb pressure fluctuations thereby protecting the primary rod seal. Some sizes include a radial and axial slot, which faces the pressure, to relieve back pressure between the primary and buffer seal. This simple design is commonly found on older construction equipment.

SCS Powerbands®
SCS Sealing Products is pleased to introduce our new line of Powerband® tight tolerance premium wear-rings. Manufactured from a highly engineered blend of premium nylon, glass fiber, and PTFE, Powerbands® offer a high strength wear-ring for all cylinder applications, including those with minimal lubrication. And, with a coefficient of friction nearly 50% lower than our standard product, your cylinders will run smoother and more efficiently than ever. All Powerbands® are fully machined with cross-section tolerances of only ±0.001 in, chamfered corners, and scarf or angle-cut end gaps. Compared to standard tolerances of ±0.0025 in., this tightened tolerance improves the alignment and concentric operation of cylinder rods and pistons. The fully machined chamfered corners will better accommodate cylinder housing grooves, further improving piston and rod alignment. Lastly, the scarf-cut end gap reduces the loss of bearing support that may occur during cylinder side-loading. When combined, these features reduce the tolerance stack-up within the components of the cylinder. As a result, your cylinders will operate more consistently and be capable of operating at higher pressures and higher side loads than with standard wear-ring products. Furthermore, with this improved cylinder operation, your seals will last longer and the life of your cylinder will be extended. Powerbands® are currently available in our most popular wear-ring dimensions, as shown here. If you do not see your size or would like more information on this innovative product, please contact SCS.

This seal, molded from high grade polyester with 5% glass fiber and 5% PTFE, may retrofit the PS1800 seals, considering all dimensions are comparable. This seal material, with a high degree of 'memory', stretches over the piston and snaps in the groove for immediate assembly. These seals also feature low friction and high abrasion and extrusion resistance which helps to eliminate assembly damage. Piston diameter 'F' dimensions are given for pistons without wear rings.

A double acting piston seal with many features; two compact seal edges to concentrate the load against the dynamic surface, a cavity between the two external seal edges to retain fluid (reducing friction and wear), side grooves to allow pressure to load the energizer in all working conditions, high sealing performance at low pressure, excellent wear-resistance, and high resistance against extrusion.
